I think the US places a little too much emphasis on Independence Day. I read Thomas Jefferson biography too. I know it meant a lot to him, as he directly fought the British off. He was the one who almost got captured and executed. The Independence was a breath of fresh air for him and his constituents. One of his colleagues grew so old that they wanted to stay alive for one more Independence Day celebration, but died 2 weeks before.
But these moments are simply a history book excerpt now. No one is alive today to talk about declaring independence from the British anymore. The meaning and impact of this occasion has greatly eroded over time as we move forward into the future.
I think it’s a bit of an insult to Britain to keep rubbing in the fact that America kicked their asses 300 years ago. How long can we actually live out this historical moment? I bet the same people who feverishly celebrate Independence also still brag about their High School years when they graduated 20 years ago.
