I live off of my Food Stamps. I am only allowed $189 per month. I can’t spend more than that and have to starve until it renews. Sometimes it can be difficult to go without food, but it’s very possible to do. I would not have learned to do this if it wasn’t for the EBT program.
People want to interpret EBT as a supplemental food help. But, it really can be the only way to purchase food. Most Americans tend to eat too much food as it is, and don’t think austerity when it comes to diet.
We are made to believe that if someone is starving for a few hours every day, they are suffering. But what about the people who suffer from overeating every day. They have it much worse because they are taxing their digestive system more than someone who goes without food for a few hours every day.
I think eating 5 meals a day is a terrible idea. The food manufacturers love this approach, but they are not looking out for our health. If I bring up that people should eat less, the food manufacturers will become furious. They want to encourage more eating with the individually, especially if that individual is eating their most profitable brand.
It’s better to have one loyal customer to your food brand who overeats it, than several customers who sporadically choose your brand from time to time. It just makes economic sense. You want to encourage your loyal customer that what they are doing is perfectly healthy in subtle ways, even though it’s not.
Budgeting food is hard to do. When people use their bank account, it is usually to cover everything in their lives from medical, to clothes, rent, repairs, and food. Many of us lose track of what we actually spend on the food portion of our lives, and that problem can run away from us.
I’m not aware of any apps that can go into your bank account and chunk what you are spending your money on into categories. So, the next best thing is to create a separate bank account where you will only keep $189 per month.
Since I’m about 235 pounds and just barely can keep my spending under $189, this might help you determine where you should be. If you weigh 300 pounds, you might want to put in $200 for the food budget account. Expect a lot more starvation days though.
The first month I had to live entirely on The $189, I had to starve the last 2 weeks. It was painful and very difficult. But after getting through that first month, I became better prepared for the next month. I stopped overeating and started reading more. I turned the need to consume food into a need to learn instead.
